My name is James Pickering and I am a geek. In general, though I’m also a nerd about certain things. But mainly a geek.
I was married for a very short eight years to a most beautiful, care-free, fun-loving woman who gave me a daughter. That daughter is almost 10 and grows and matures every day.
For five years I ran a local hobby blog chronicling geek life in Dallas, Texas. In 2014, I turned that blog into an actual comic book shop and it survived almost five years.
I now find myself turning fifty-one in two weeks, and it’s like I’m starting over again. Trying to figure out what to do with my life. What’s my next step now that I don’t have a shop anymore?
For one thing, I need to concentrate on me, my daughter and giving myself more time to grieve over my loss. I gave myself a year and during that time lost a brother. I should have taken more time.
I also feel like I have so much to give back to others and so I’ve created this blog to write about this and that and pass along information that I believe is of interest. By creating a new blog, I can seperate it from the old, so that there is no confusion. And as I said, to get a fresh start on this next phase of life.
I love comics and movies. I am an avid reader and science-fiction nut. I’ve been playing Dungeons & Dragons since 1977. I love old pulp novels, serials such as Flash Gordon, and cool artwork. I love underground and new wave (80’s) music and was a local club DJ for twelve years. Now that I have a young daughter, I find myself a big supporter of teachers and am always looking for ways to improve their arsenal of tools in educating my child. And I do the same for small businesses.
So, you will find me talking about all of these things here. And I hope that you will find something useful that you can take and put to use in your daily life or that will add a little sunshine to that life. And I hope that it will keep you coming back.
As I go forward, I’m going to transition over to the new accounts and get away from posting on the A Galaxy Called Dallas accounts and then shut them down at the end of August. The only posts that I will put on the other accounts is basically a counttdown to the end of them month to try and get everyone over to this account.
To help facilitate that, if you’ve already joined me here in my little corner of the universe, thank you. And I ask that you share to your friends and your audience. I’m looking forward to sharing my world and hearing back about yours.
