My name is James Pickering and I am a geek. In general, though I’m also a nerd about certain things. But mainly a geek.
I was married for a very short eight years to a most beautiful, care-free, fun-loving woman who gave me a daughter. That daughter is almost 10 and grows and matures every day.
For five years I ran a local hobby blog chronicling geek life in Dallas, Texas. In 2014, I turned that blog into an actual comic book shop and it survived almost five years.
I now find myself turning fifty-one in two weeks, and it’s like I’m starting over again. Trying to figure out what to do with my life. What’s my next step now that I don’t have a shop anymore?
For one thing, I need to concentrate on me, my daughter and giving myself more time to grieve over my loss. I gave myself a year and during that time lost a brother. I should have taken more time.
I also feel like I have so much to give back to others and so I’ve created this blog to write about this and that and pass along information that I believe is of interest. By creating a new blog, I can seperate it from the old, so that there is no confusion. And as I said, to get a fresh start on this next phase of life.
I love comics and movies. I am an avid reader and science-fiction nut. I’ve been playing Dungeons & Dragons since 1977. I love old pulp novels, serials such as Flash Gordon, and cool artwork. I love underground and new wave (80’s) music and was a local club DJ for twelve years. Now that I have a young daughter, I find myself a big supporter of teachers and am always looking for ways to improve their arsenal of tools in educating my child. And I do the same for small businesses.
So, you will find me talking about all of these things here. And I hope that you will find something useful that you can take and put to use in your daily life or that will add a little sunshine to that life. And I hope that it will keep you coming back.
